Sunday, May 2, 2010:: Mark 12:34-40

“Heart, Soul, Mind & Strength and the Courage to Love God and Others”

Congratulations class of 2010

  • It’s been a long road, you’ve made it!
  • Today is about honoring you, but there are some lessons you should know…

The theme this year for Senior Reception is the “Wizard of Oz.”

  • Lessons from the main characters:
    • (Scarecrow) Brain/Mind – keep learning, if you stop learning, you stop growing (Co. 3:2; 1 Peter 1:13)
      • Our minds are important – where the battle rages
      • Deut. 11:18
    • (Tin Man) HeartGuard your heart (Pro. 4:23)
      • Love much and love often
      • 1 Cor. 13:1-8
    • (Lion) Courage –standing firm in the face of fear, and trials, not wavering
      • Stand up, be different, live out loud, to serve, to do good
      • Rom. 12:1-2
    • (Dorothy) Home – She wanted to get back to Kansas
      • As followers of Jesus our goal is to get home too –in the eternal presence of God and with Christ
      • Phil. 3:20
    • (The Wicked Witch of the West) Trials and Difficulties
      • We will encounter difficult people and circumstances
      • James 1:2-4
    • (The Wizard) supposed to be all powerful
      • turns out to be a fraud
      • symbolic of counterfeit religion
      • YHWH is no fraud

Dorothy and her companions epitomize the journey we are all on (the yellow brick road)

  • For us it is the narrow path (Matthew 7:13-14)
    • The way of Jesus:
      • Summarized in Mark 12:34-40 (Matt. 22:40, “All the law and the prophets hang on these two commandments”)
    • The way of Jesus is loving God and loving others
      • We are to love God with the totality of our being:
        • Our hearts (Tin man)
        • Soul (Dorothy )
        • Mind (Scarecrow)
        • Strength (Lion)
  • One final thought:
    • The relationships we make on this journey are crucial (loving others )
    • You need the church, and we need you
    • Dorothy couldn’t have traveled alone, and neither can you
    • You are graduating high school:
      • Don’t graduate from the church
      • Don’t graduate from your faith!
