I'm trying to figure out weather I've been religious my whole life, spiritual or maybe just both. I strayed for years away from church and God somewhat intentionally. Looking back I was probably rebellious in my heart against god at younger teenage age. Seeing things from a new perspective I believed I lived in fear for most of my life of religion and never truly had a relationship with God. My fear kept me straight for a long time and I would assure myself that I was saved to justify my fear. Once I fully and openly rejected Christianity (much later in life) and its rules I felt more free than i had ever felt in my life. No worries of God squashing me and sending me straight to hell because I simply choose not to believe that "garbage" anymore. I spent the next several years of my life in total violation the bible. I mocked Jesus Christ and felt good about it. I Experimented with new age beliefs and other religions, even the occult. Eventually I found myself rock bottom. Depressed like never before and empty still searching for answers. I cried out to "God" and said I dont know who which God I'm talking to but I want to know the truth. Every since then I've had numerous run-ins and discussions with christian people. Ive recently started visiting a christian church and have felt a hope and peace like never before and fear is not apart of the equation this time.

Where, then, do we stop seeing the Bible as a narrative? Brian McLaren's point to view the Bible this way is his way of making sense of the often violent Old Testament writing with the arguably lesser violent New Testament. Jesus taught us to be very peaceful people, so any literate individual can see why McLaren is proposing this 'brilliant', 'new' way of reading scripture. However, again I ask, where are we are supposed to stop?

Is Jesus' teachings also simply a narrative? Is it "God's word to people back then" as Brian would suggest? If the Old Testament was so long ago that we can say that it carries no meaning for us now, is the New Testament supposed to be so recent history that we can't also treat it with the same level of disrespect?

Brian McLaren is proposing that we discount God's Word. It's not a great new way of interpreting the Bible. It's the same old trick that directly leads to questioning God's Word that the serpent pulled back in Genesis. He asked Eve what God really had said. Go ahead and read Genesis chapter 3 as a narrative and see what lessons you can come up with there.

I am so troubled with the religious issues, as a person I am so sure in my heart that I am spiritual, I love my Creator God, but the plenty programmes from the church really want to change the way I think of my person and my love for spirituality. My wife wants me to be at every church program, but I don't think I must be there to make good living out of my life. I believe in God and goes to church, but she insist i attend all church programmes. I have tried to make see reason with me, that being spiritual is ore adoring than being religious, please help me out

Doug,

Yeah, the baseball analogy was helpful and captured my attention at the beginning of the book.

Scott, you are right about the way things are made to sound absolute. I read his Communicating for a Change, and while I am no great speaker, I got the impression that if you weren't preaching the way he was teaching, then you weren't really preaching.

I can definitely see how in this book, the argument could be made that one wasn't practicing ministry right if they weren't using the seven steps.

I think for organizations that have lost their way, this book, and his Visionering would certainly be helpful, if more than any thing else, it would be fodder for great discussion amongst a leadership team.

many ministry friends of mine find andy stanley to be a blowhard, but i've always enjoyed his insights and suggestions (even when i don't buy into all of them). this was a good book (and i'm a bit frustrated - i own it, but it's missing off my shelf...) and it had good ideas - i did take a look at my ministry after reading it and made some tweaks here and there.

the reason i think folks are unhappy with stanley is that he makes things sound absolute - either this is happening, or it's not right. if you're not doing this, you need to rethink... etc. i've always taken his sermons and his books and pulled what i needed out of them without feeling like i had to do EVERYTHING.
